Yes, both vendors offer "free" trial downloads of their respective Linux distributions for z/VM. You can download and install SLES 11 and/or RHEL 5.4 directly from their web sites; you should be able to follow the links off of their home pages.

There are other, non-commercial Linxu distributions available for z/VM, including Centos and Debian as well. They're really 'free'.....
