Mark, I know this reply is late on but if you are using the z/VM Backup/Restore product from IBM and can't find some messages call IBM support.
This product is from Rocket software and generally IBM passes the problem back to Rocket for answers. I had some of the same problems with their software but did get answers from Rocket.
