You can always look at Apple's tech specs site <http://support.apple.com/specs/

Much more reliable than asking random strangers on a mailing list :-)

For the current MacBook line:

"2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM; two SO-DIMM slots  
support up to 4GB"

So if you have DDR2 RAM in the Compaq, you cannot use it.

You can look up older models listed as well, so when you find a  
prospect, check it out there.
