Ah-Ha!  It was Stuffit AVR that was the culprit!  I had no idea that
preference was even there, let alone what it's supposed to do.


However did you manage to find that thread on the apple discussion boards?
I searched and searched, but found nothing about the
Finder/renaming/disappearing issue.
