Odds are it is just an unsupported resolution or sync frequency.

Do you have a second monitor attached to this computer?  If you do then 
bring up System Preferences / Display.  Click on a button called 
something like Collect Windows.  It will bring both Display System 
Preferences windows to that screen.  You can then change the resolution 
and sync.  Try setting it to 800 x 600 @ 60Hz.  You can then set the 
resolution to the monitor's native res and try different sync settings.

If you don't, try doing a PRAM zap.  This will reset the monitor setting 
to something likely to work.
