So long as you don't need the ability to go back and get an earlier version of a file, demote it from being a time machine drive, erase it and add it as the new time machine drive. If you wish to expand your time machine back up, get a larger drive, stop time machine, clone your existing Time Machine to it, and restart time machine with the new drive.
