Good thing I'm stubborn.  I tried it a couple more times and finally  
it took.  Tiger is now installed, and I have it ethernetted into my  
base station and I'm installing tiger updates right now.  Once the  
system is all up to date I can disconnect it and go about setting up  
all the user accounts I need.  Not sure why the installer didn't want  
to see the iMac's HD the first couple times (I'm sure it was booted  
into target disk mode properly).

No matter, tiger installed like a charm (finally).
