No, just shift.

Release it when you see the spinning gear.

Given the speed of your machine, it can take quite a while to dump 
the existing caches, sniff the hardware, then build the new caches.

Another possibility is to boot holding down cmd-V, for verbose mode. 
That will give you the unix console display - plain text flying along 
your screen.  Then you can see where its getting stuck.
