Here's the message I get, from within the Canon print utility:

Canon IJ Printer Utility - iP6220D
Ink Info Number: 1686
The following ink may have run out: "Color"
The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled
since the ink level cannot be correctly detected. If you want to
continue printing without this function, press the OK button.
Canon recommends to use new genuine Canon cartridges in order to
obtain optimum qualities.

But the only button that appears is Cancel. So it's impossible to get
the printer to print anything, including a test page.

The third-party cartridges I've gotten (from LaserMonks) used to work
but they don't seem to anymore. They haven't had a brand name of any
sort on them that I can see. I'm hunting around for a different
supplier and am glad to hear recommendations.

I have no idea if any such are around here. I suppose they must be but
I have no idea of names.

Crayon pooper? Whazzat?
I have a workhorse old LaserWriter 12/640 PS that I use for most
monochrome printing precisely because of the cost per page. My color
printing needs are pretty small so I don't feel a huge push to move to
color laser printing anytime soon, especially with a son about to
start college. (Holy mackerel, but that's a pricey endeavor nowadays.)
