You can always open them in Preview, select the Inspector windows and it'll 
tell you what created them. Checking 'Document properties' in Acrobat Pro will 
tell you the same thing. 

This can be useful in identifying intermittent PDF/Printer conflict issues.

Remember when PDF's were a simple standard that just let everyone produce a 
nicely formatted document that everyone would see in the same way? 8-/
