Hi Jane, In most cases Safari works great, you might give it a shot. There are the rare times that a page is looking for Internet Explorer or Firefox.
The tech you spoke with must have either not known much about Mac or may have not known that you were using Mac. *Internet Explorer has not been available for Mac in years. I would suggest downloading Google Chrome and trying Shutterfly there: http://www.google.com/chrome/ I would caution you to not set or use Firefox as default browser for everyday use on Mac. My experience with Firefox on Mac has been horrible. Thus, I keep Firefox around only for those times when absolutely nessecary to use it. Google Chrome is much better. Although, I still use Safari as my default browser as it just plain works.
