Probably the unit requires more power than a single USB socket can supply. 
 Have you tried plugging it into a powered USB hub that is connected to 
your lovely G4 lampshade? I have had similar problems using external hard 
drives (connecting to eMacs,) that just get their power from USB. They 
appear to be dead, but connect them via a powered hub and OSX sees them no 
problems.  There are leads available that have two USB plugs on the 
computer end, that attempt to solve this, but you are better using a 
powered hub. Also you wouldn't want to 'blow' your USB by trying to draw 
too much power from it - although they do reset, if they don't, on the G4 
iMac you're pretty borked!
