Hi!
This seems like a situation I've had where the automounter waits for some
networking timemout before ketting GDM start. Are your homes automounted?
Try disabling the automunter?

ok... I tried the text boot. the mounting of zfs filesytem and other
regular stuff take about 40seconds and then i see the console login prompt
for about 1min. and then i am redirected to the graphical login. there are
no error messages at login.....
i guess some unnecessary back ground work goes on at login....

Seriously... I'm on a 1.5 GB RAM Toshiba Tecra M2... and I find it
boots just as fast as it always has.
Maybe it's waiting on network timeout?
