About ചാവി chavi is mainly used for 🗝️ key is quite logical, because the plant is rare, not well known, not of much ethno-commercial use. Since you pointed out that most Malayalis would think of "ചാവി chavi" as key, I found on internet that it is a loanword from Portuguese. It is used by the following languages: - Konkani (Goan): चावी (Chavi) - Marathi: चावी (Chavi) - Hindi / Urdu: चाबी / چابی (Chabi) Regards.
