Apparently I'm missing something too, because I really don't get the logic behind this approach. DAD will take care of making sure that the interface identifiers don't clash, which is as good as guaranteed anyway if at least one end can borrow an EUI-64 from another interface.

In practice I haven't been able to get stateless autoconfig to work over PPP, and even if it would work first doing an IP6CP exchange and then router solicitation/router advertisement/neighbor discovery is suboptimal. Especially since this only covers the case where you need a single IPv6 address, a use case that's quickly dying out (i.e., dial-up).
