Basic Qualifications 
• Server side Java development (4+ years required)

• Knowledge of Java web technologies: Servlets, Struts, JSP, Taglibs,
Velocity, ExtJS 
• Experience integrating 3rd party libraries and packages (ie, search
engines) 
• UNIX/Linux experience required (4+ years) 
• Object Oriented Development experience 
• In-depth knowledge of build systems (Quick Build, Ant, Maven) and source
control (Subversion, CVS) 
• Relational DB experience required, Sybase and UDB experience preferred 
• Programming in Perl and shell scripts 
• Cursory knowledge of network protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP, HTTPS) 
• Strong communication skills 
• Motivated and self-starter

Job Summary & Responsibilities 
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW: 
• The Portal team designs and develops web solutions for use by Goldman
Sachs clients and employees.  The GS client-facing portal serves as the
primary web channel for distributing GS research, analytics, market data,
and portfolio data to GS institutional clients.  The GS internal-facing
sales portal serves as the primary web channel for distributing sales data,
trade opportunities, and sales metrics throughout the organization. 
• The Portal team provides technical services to other teams within GS to
facilitate the development of features within the platform.  The team
builds, distributes and integrates core web technologies like AJAX, web page
templates (Velocity, JSP), table frameworks, and real-time data in a way
that is highly scalable, fault tolerant and extensible. 
• The team is responsible for creating and maintaining features of the
client-facing and internal-facing sites, and building services and tools
that keep it running smoothly 24/7. This includes managing user on-boarding;
user preferences; entitlements; publishing APIs and document management
systems; market data feeds; search engines; usage statistics and reporting. 
• The technology team is based out of New York, but is also represented in
Bangalore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and London. The sites are used globally, and
contain content in English, Japanese and Chinese. 
• As a lead developer, the candidate will work with the global portal
technology team, the Portal business development team and other GS
technology teams, to deliver scalable, extensible and reliable web-based
solutions.  The candidate must understand the nuances of building and
deploying a global, client-facing web application and be responsible for
working with the the global Portal Technology Team to quickly address and
resolve runtime issues. 
• As a developer on the New York team, the candidate will be responsible for
designing and managing local projects and helping local technology teams
achieve their development goals on the portal platform.  A successful
candidate will partner with local application teams, evangelize the portal
locally, and extend the core portal platform globally. 
• Portal infrastructure is written primarily in Java, and uses many
web-based technologies including Tomcat, Apache, JavaScript, ExtJS and
AJAX.  Portal relies heavily on open-source software, and databases
including Sybase and DB2 UDB.  A successful candidate will be able to lead
projects that use these technologies and the frameworks built on top of
them, and help set and drive the technological vision of the Portal. 
  
Other responsibilities include: 
• Set and follow quality standards for software development 
• Identify problems and suggest improvements in existing software 
• Design and plan software development projects 
• Assist in deploying and testing software into runtime environments 
• Suggest improvements to the existing software development process 
• Work well with a team of developers
