I might have spoken to soon. It does work with JDK 8 for ARM.
However there is still a bug. When Jenkins is installed in the way I described it also installs the following packages: gcj-4.7-base gcj-4.7-jre gcj-4.7-jre-headless gcj-4.7-jre-lib gcj-jre gcj-jre-headless libgcj13 libgcj13-awt. I didn't notice them when I installed Jenkins thus thinking I only had one Java version which failed. But apparently doesn't gcj provide all the classes which Jenkins need.
So I still would move to all standard classes and fix the dependencies.
