Henri, you might want to have a look to my fork of the plugin. The current master allows to automatically create jobs for merge requests. The reporting of the job status does not yet work on a standard gitlab deployment (we use a patched one to support commit status), but I'm working on it and in any case it could be useful to you in its current shape.
Consider that at some point, the payload on merge requests did suffer a change, so it might not work as is. If I'm right, that happened from 7.3 to 7.4 (our deployment is based on the omnibus package from around mid December)
