The problem with safety in chemical companies has more to do with the
cost-cutting mentality of the educated, well-trained senior management than
it is to do with the deficiencies of the tribal worker. Union Carbide
Corporation was run by white people. It is now infamous as the company that
caused the world's worst industrial disaster. Placing an untrained person in
a dangerous job is dangerous. However, why set up industries that don't
offer any opportunities to the local labour pool. It would have been better
to pursue economic development (including industrial entrepreneurship) that
is more in line with locally available resources and skills.
