This is of course the "top" of the technology curve where companies like Cisco
and Juniper cater only to the top end of the market, like hard drive
manufacturers or computer manufacturers of 20-50 years ago. Many of those
companies didn't make it, or had to completely transform. See books like "The
Innovator's Dilemma" and many others.

The simple fact that knowledgeable folks can discuss the core technologies
behind packet switching (TCAM, etc) like car guys discuss turbochargers means
that someone is or will be putting together the technology and eviscerate the
low and medium end of the market before too long...

OpenBSD is evolving an MPLS IP VPN and LDP implementation, and others are too.
The only real advantage that Cisco and Juniper had in the past was
interoperability with a wide range of odd telco interfaces and those interfaces
are basically gone now. Network interfaces are much more standardized,
compared to where we were 10 years ago.
