I suffered from the same, until I came here.
Not much about 'complexity' as supposed by the reporter. I created my own video
clip, without, and added the subtitles later (23.04.3).
I never intended to create a sub-title file, and yet I did, not knowing. Just
turning it off in VLC actually brought the expected result.
My suggestion, RFE, simply to implement: ask the user if a separate subtitle
file is desired. I for one didn't want / need one. I just wasn't aware of its
(automatic) existence.
