I wish we could get a "ban feeding squirrels in this area". They are a
real menace. People would not agree to feed rats - squirrels are no
different they are just rats with long tails. Susan wrote that she still
throws out handfuls of sunflower seeds and peanuts for the blue jays, she
should get a good squirrel proof bird feeder and stop encouraging the
rodents.

In this area people feed them almonds, peanuts and walnuts - obviously
these nuts are not their natural food because they are not crops that are
found here. Shells are left all over the place, in fact an 80-year old
lacemaker who had been at my house almost fell because she stepped out of
the house on to a walnut shell which had been left on my step. Luckily
someone was on the outside to help her and stopped her from falling.

So please, if you have rodents in your area, please let them find natural
food or move away to where the food source is better. We have so many
black squirrels here that rely on human intervention to feed them - if they
had to forage for themselves we would be better off.

OK I'm off my soap box and leaving for work.

Malvary in the centre of Ottawa where I'm inundated with black squirrels, a
couple of raccoons, a rabbit and the occasional skunk.
