Hi Debbie,
I believe your "mystery bobbin" is a continental that has had spangles added! I
have several of these among my hundreds of bobbins. I moved to Bucks, England
in 1977 and soon began bobbin lacemaking. This was before David Springett came
on the scene, and my teacher talked Dennis Sizeland into making some bobbins
for our class. His daughter and her husband inherited the business and it is
now Winslow Bobbins.

Before Dennis, we got bobbins where we could - thrift shops, boot sales, and
estate sales where we could often find antique bobbins for £1! The
Needlewomans Shop on Regent Street in London sold plastic bobbins. They were
thin, black, bent easily, and had to be spangled. I often saw continental
bobbins with spangles - drill a hole and add some beads if the lacemaker was
used to spangled bobbins! Some of mine are quite old with very old beads and
wire.

Happy Lacemaking,

Re: the mystery bobbin

I have posted 2 pictures of the bobbin on webshots; one by itself, and
one between two Springetts bobbins.
Hope this helps...
