Ray,
You have a really nice Mill there. An FYI: A "duplex" gear is any of the gear plate assemblies that have two gears attached to each other - with one being larger in diameter than the other. They mount via their common center onto the adjustable "elbow" connector assembly (I think Curtis calls it a banjo?).
The Duplex's interior gear meshes with the Index plate's gears to its right and the outer gear on duplex plates meshes with the "directional" gear (left or right assembly) to its left. I'm sharing this because it was longer than it should have been before I realized why it was referred to as a "Duplex" gear.
What you have been doing regarding taking it all apart, cleaning it up, and re-assembling it was a really smart move. For one, you are able to give it a thorough cleaning. Secondly, you are seeing how it is "Supposed" to be put together - and whether it was. And lastly, you are being very deliberate in ensuring it is put together this time - the way the manual says it is to be assembled.
Also - Great photos by the way.
Have a Wonderful Weekend!
Mac
