Can I enlarge on that?
One of the things that emerges from my own study (nothing like as deep
as many people I know) is the feeling for my ancestors. None of them was
rich or powerful. The occupation featuring most often is "Ag Lab" or
Agricultural Labourer, who lived probably in a tied cottage and who all
too often ended up in the workhouse. Then there are Basketmaker, Slate
Enameller, Porter and so on***
My parents were the first generation who came to own their own home.
Most of these souls brought up enormous families (no family planning in
those days) and medical help was expensive and often ineffective.
What all this does is to make me feel grateful...that things have
improved for many like me, though not for a lot of the world's
population. And it also makes me conscious of the brevity and frailty of
human life.
I could go on but I don't want to choke up anyone's mailbox...
