For some, the problem might be solved by:

Legacy Home tab -> Options button -> Options item on the popup menu -> Internet 
Options tab.
Make sure the "Allow Legacy to connect ..." choice is selected.

For mine, I had this option selected, but still did not get automatic 
notification.  I had to click on Updates before it found that there was an 
update, but I might have had Legacy already running from the previous day.

Mike,

There is an option for a reminder to pop-up every 30 days to check for updates.

It's still available in v8. Go to Options > Customize  12.5 - on the 
Prompts/Reminders tab.
