Seeking further clarification, or common practices:

I use AKAs a lot, but I suppose that it will be best to use an Event (“Change
of Name”) for the change of name (the several persons I am considering have an
“unofficial” adoption or have used a different lastname) though I could only
guess that date within a decade.

Should I enter these people as distinct lastnames, using (my self-determined
cut-off date) and AKA them in both records, perhaps?

I will have to look carefully at the Report options for including AKAs (as
Cathy suggests).

Ian,

1) add an AKA - also known as - hover over the icons on Family View or the
Individual Information screen and you'll find it.

2) add an event - call it Change of Name or Deed Poll or whatever you like.

3) Note you don't do this for change of name on Marriage - there is a place on
the Marriage Information screen to note Married names and you can choose to see
them on the Name List, the Index View and in Indexes to book - and in all those
places you can also choose to show AKAs.
There is an option in Options - Customise 2.8 where you can choose to set the
custom of wives taking their husband's surname to be the default. This setting
can be overridden in the Marriage Information so you set it for what is normal
for you.

4) In reports you can include AKAs in the body of the report - choose in the
Report options on the Include tab.
