Having trouble setting up RedHat Linux 4.2 on a Sparc to
1. accept remote commands such as rsh.
Whenever a client attempts to execute the rsh or rcp commands
  the message "Permission denied" appears.
2. export files to be mounted as NFS mounts.
Whenever, I attempt to remote mount a file exported from the
Linux server the same "Permission denied appears"

I have noticed two things that seem to be missing. First there is no
program like exportfs that is present on other unix systems, although the
file /etc/exports is documented.

Second, the files /etc/hosts.equiv and .rhosts are not documented in Redhat
Linux. Are they needed, or is the tcp wrappers package sufficient.

All i managed to do was getting the PPP to the RAS server running,
the dial back is probably negotiated in the PPP handshake and i have
seen nothing about dialback in the PPP source. It would be nice to have,
i did think about writing to the guy that made the MS-Chap in ppp,
but never did. Maybe you will get around to it. -job

I observed the same problems also, but on SynOptics token-ring hardware
and Bay ethernet hardware. We ended up making the MTU size on all the
token-ring machines down to 1496. I don't know if the problem was ever
*really* resolved, I left the company. But I doubt it's your hardware,
I bet it's NT... :)

Hello, everyone! I have a Dell 4300 server at work which has a PCI
EtherExpress Pro100+ installed (not on-board). It is being seen fine and
comes up (on the hub which has 10/100MBpS speed indicators) as 100MBpS.
However, we want it to come up at 10MBpS. I am assuming that the driver
defaults to the highest possible speed. How do I switch it down? Is there
any way at all? The technician at intel said that there might be a command
line switch for the driver, but how and where would I set it? The driver
loads straight from the kernel, not as a module. Please let me know, I am
eternally grateful to all.

Thanks,
        Kaushik

Can a Linux dial-up Internet gateway support "dial-up on demand", i.
e., dial-up automatically when traffic to the Internet is detected?

Thank you!

I am not telling you to use anytning but what you wish to use. what I am telling
you is that there is a way to get a copy of Red Hat 5.2 for $2.95 (american) I
don;t know about you,,but for three bucks I'd rather have the install CD"s so in
case anything ever went wrong reinstalling would be quick and easy,,,,(well as easy
as it can be in linux :)::)))))
I am also NOT telling you to do anything special with your harddrive,,I personally
do not care what you have on your 7.5giger,,,,
if you are intrested go to www.linuxcentral.com and order the "GPL" version of
REDHAT 5.2!!!!! (and between you and me,I'd see if I can find the "Mandrake"
version of RH5.2 it comes with KDE already integrated,,but if that is not available
as GPL then just get reg RH5.2 and downsuck KDE if ya want it)

I have a Netgear XM128 isdn externel modem, and debian 2.0 (hacked to
shreds)

I was having problems configuring the modem with minicom, but I have
overcome that I believe. My problem right now is trying to set it up in.
What options to compile into the kernel, what files do I need, possible
web pages that can help, etc etc.

I spent the last 3 hours looking for stuff on the web to print, however
most of it seems to involve European type setups. I have the std National
ISDN (Virginia USA) switch.

Please responce via email.

ok,
after using my SuSE5.3 box for PPP to internet it is starting to get
a little slow,,and as cable modems are (hopefully) going to be available
here soon I figure it is time to learn how to set up the Network card in
Linux (system is a 98/suse dual boot) in 98 (shudder) I can see my
internal network and all is fine,,in suse I never set up the net card
and now would like to do so,I rebuilt the kernel to include support for
my card, rebooted the new image,,and when I try to run ifconfig,,I get
somthing like noioctrl or something like that,,now I know that this is
something I am not doing correctly,,where can I find a detailed HOW-TO
that describes the adding of Network cards? and such,,i am scanning man
pages by the dozen,

Could someone point me in the right direction???

Thanks in advance

i too have been having the same problem. i am using a Boca 56k PnP Voice Data
Fax modem on linux 5.1 and get no response either. i have tried reinstalling
linux several times with no result. i have tried linking /dev/modem to every
different /dev/cua. and i have even tried nailing down the com port with
isapnp_serial.

is my modem a windows-only modem, or am i missing something here?

i would prefer an email response, please.. thanks

I am setting up NIS under Debian 2.0 and
while I have user passwd and shadow passwords working,
groups isn't. Should the groups a user

my installation they arn't. The only group a user
on my nis client is a member is his or her user id
group. Any suggestions?

Hi all,

I've currently got a linux box hooked up via a cablemodem. In addition I've
got a registered domain. Now, the problem I've got is that I need to
collect mail from my DomainPOP account (call it what you will)
which collects mail for my domain (duh). I'm running fetchmail, but I get
the following error whenever I run it:

fetchmail: IMAP connection to mail.cybercom.net failed: unrecoverable \
name server error
fetchmail: POP3 connection to mail.cybercom.net failed: unrecoverable \
name server error

This error occurs without any exit code to help me out, and it happens
immediately, there is no delay of trying to connect, trying to open a port,
nothing. I've got a firewall running but even when I clear the firewall
entries and run flappin' in the breeze, I still get this error. Has anybody
seen this before? I'm running RedHat 5.1 (as if that really matters) and my
MH is the default: sendmail - though still configured just out of the box.

My future problem will no doubt be getting the POP3 server running, but
first things first and I don't think that will be quite as much of a bear
(famous last words).

Anyway, thanks for listening.

Dearest Stuart,,, If you know about RH5.1 or 5.2 and configuring to a
cable modem, I will tell you anything you want to know to get this thing
working correctly,, My roommate and I have spent WAY too many nights up
trying to figure it out, and it's not going very good so far (note, I'm
using Windows to get online) my windows partition lets me get online
just fine,, I've written down the cfg of windows and transfered as much
as possible to the network config, in our Linux partition, but it's just
not going... We're running RH 5.1, (we have 5.2 also, but haven't
installed it yet,, trying to get the net up first) We have Cox@Home with
a Motorola Cable Modem, they put in the Eth card,, please ask me
anything you want or need to know,, I'll call international long
distance for an hour if that's what it takes to get this to work,, we've
been working on this for about a month and a half and ANYTHING you can
do to help is very, very grately appreciated, I don't know Linux very
good, and my roommate is decent, but it's still not enough to cut the
cake, When we boot linux up,,(our lilo is on a 3.5") it always stops on
sendmail for a long time,, the PC light on the modem is never lit on
linux, and we've gotten messages about deleting a /.netscape/lockfile
which we've done and it quickly returned,, Please help me,,if you have
any questions, or think you can help at all, Please, please do,, I've
went through more coffee in the last month than I have my entire life...
If you need me to get on the phone I'll get on the phone, if you need me
to buy a program, I'll buy the program, but we need help... soon we'll
need a different kind of help if I can't get this to work...
