When I've used it, I've found mutt works well. I thought of trying it 
recently, but found the setup is quite a chore -- it could use a setup 
tool or template -- and I also rather like having calendar available at 
same time (I suspect someone has done this for mutt, but ...).  I am 
using mutt with offlineIMAP or with archived mail i.e. mutt -f 
myfile.mytype, and that is very effective.

I agree spam filtering also a good related topic.
