Yeah, this has been around for a long time. I'm not sure if it's ever
been "correct", though I only started using the rotation settings
shortly after joining.

Actually, Gnome behaves the same way as xsetwacom currently does. I
need to set both to "clockwise", despite my Cintiq being physically
rotated 90 degrees to the left. Its for that reason I thought it might
just be me that is backwards :)
Looking at some man pages, it seems that xrandr defines rotation in
terms of the transformation ("This causes the output contents to be
rotated in the specified direction"). I imagine that Gnome is simply
pulling the normal/left/right/inverted value and rewording it to their
circular cousins normal/clockwise/anti-clockwise/180-degrees. I'd
suspect Gnome did some usability analysis, but it could also simply be
an oversight on their part. Perhaps they should be pinged as well?

That sounds reasonable to me, though it may be confusing that "CW" and
"clockwise" do different things :) I suppose there's not much that can
be done about it though... I'd be sure to change the xsetwacom man
page definition of CW/CCW while these are both around to make it clear
that the "old" way referred to the transformation (despite what the
docs indicated before) and the new way to the physical rotation (this
time for real).
