I'd like to thank Michael Heiming & James Vasey who asked "what
motherboard am I
using" (CUV4X-D Dual socket 370) and Matt Egan who suggested it may be the
bios. After doing a google search on the above motherboard (what I should
have done in the first place) turns out there are many of us experiencing
the same problem. The fix is to disable the MultiProcessor Specificaion
(MPS) version 1.4 in the bios. Disabling this option still allows you to
use dual processors but reverts to the older MPS 1.1 spec. I'm
assuming the 2.2 series kernel doesn't know anything about the 1.4
spec and that's why it worked. There's a
debate whether the problem is an incorrect interpretation of the 1.4 Spec
by ASUS or by the 2.4 kernel developers. Anyways just wanted to say
thank-you for all those who took the time to read my email as always it's
appreciated.

Take care everyone
