My take on this:
-there's less to maintain.  Upgrades to X, nfs, kernel, and so on are
all automatic.  With a cut-down system, you have to upgrade the machine
from time to time.

-If you take the hard drive out and use a floppy, your battery will last
longer and the machine will be lighter.
