yes, of course! think about xservers and xclients as a top-down client-server
architecture: the xserver run locally and manage the input/output devices
(keyboard, monitor and mouse), the xclients (the applications like firefox,
xpdf, gedit and any others) may run anywhere on the internet (as long as the
connection to the xserver is availabe)

Theroically it is possible, practically is very complex. KDE and GNOME are very
complex desktop environments, made up of many distinct applications interacting
each other and with system services. You have to put each of those many
components and theyre referring libs inside the ltsp tree that is exported via
nfs, but if you succeed in this hellish task than you havo to instruct the
environment to run the used applications on the server... another and even more
diabolic task i think :)
by the way i think you need something other than ltsp, maybe something like
this:  http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/diskless-howto.xml, or google for "linux
diskless howto"
