Joe,

You need to log into something, before running fluxbox.  That way, the
system has a clue who you are.

So, a display manager is used for that (XDM,GDM,KDM).  That gives you a
session on the server.  it is then possible to have the display manager
launch your favorite desktop environment.  Just look for the config
files for your particular display manager to see how it launches a
session.

With KDM and GDM, it is possible to do an auto-login, using any userid
that you want.  Check the ltsp contrib page for more info on setting up
kdm for auto-login.
