I just tried this with the quotes as you suggested, but again it does not seem 
to run. I get no feed back to the terminal saying "...... Row when ready").

But as I did this, I noticed the small screen on the rowing machine had 
responded to the command from the ltsp terminal. The rower was waiting for the 
5K didtance. 
Now I see this happens even without the quotes. 
If I complete the rowing distance, I find row_metrics.py has been running in 
the background. The two output files it finishes with, get created in to my 
home directory, on the ltsp server.

So, my application has been working all along, with ltsp-localapps, just in the 
background.

I guess that does it, mystery solved!
