Hello Norrie,

this is a sign that the desktop session cannot be started. I know this
problem from using gnome-session-flashback on thin clients.
gnome-session-flashback is broken detecting graphics acceleration, but
since you use xubuntu-desktop on fat clients, it may be different.

However, you can try the following:

- At the login screen, can you select from several sessions? If so, be
sure to select the xubuntu session.
- To disable graphics acceleration, try putting the following line in
your lts.conf:
  X_OPTION_01="\"DRI\" \"False\""
