Have you installed Gnome Fallback?
sudo apt-get install gnome-session-flashback
Then just choose Gnome (Metacity).
Or try to put .dmrc file in user's home directory.
ltsp@ltsp-pnp:/home/ltsp001$ cat .dmrc
[Desktop]
Session=gnome-fallback
Or put it in lts.conf, this is an example (my Virtualbox test server).
