Welp, the dvi spins the motor on a 1.2m drive. So I looked at the bad drive and found a small patch of corroded traces and solder joints. The patch is under a couple small electrolytic caps that don't look swelled or leaking, but there's nothing else to explain the corroded spot.
I cleaned up the area and re-soldered some parts and replaced a couple of traces with wire. Now the drive spins, and the dvi recognizes that the door was closed, and tries to read the disk. But now it says Drive0 is not a system disk. So I might have a bad boot disk, or this drive might still have some other issues. Oh well. Light does not come on? -- Light comes on before even inserting a disk or closing the door, which is odd, but is what the manual says to expect. Main motor does not spin or even twitch at all. With the cover off the dvi, I can feel the bottom of the motor itself, where the speed calibration sticker is, so I'm not relying just on sound. Certainly the first step is to just plug some other drive into the dvi or plug this drive into something else. I don't have any half height 360k drives handy, but I do have a few 1.2M drives. It wouldn't hurt anything to just plug one of those in, and insert a scrap disk, just to see if the dvi makes the motor spin. That alone would clear the dvi. Once I know that much, I can get another drive, maybe repair the drive I have, or possibly figure out the jumpers on my 1.2M drive to get it to work as a 360k drive. -- bkw
