My platitudes to all respondents, both comprehensible and otherwise.
Anna

A summary:
* Longitudes are of equal length, while latitiudes decrease in length as
you move away from the equator.
      Therefore LONGitudes are LONGer than latitudes.

* With LONGitude, the lines are the same LENGTH.

* The EquaTor is a line of LaT - both have a T.
A line through both pOles is a LOng - both have an O.

* A big poster:
Longitude = X coordinate = east / west position
Latitude = Y coordinate = north / south position
Read it at least once a week for four years

* Grab one oar with your *right* hand and run it out the port side rowers
face the stern), pull vigorously and you'll spin in circles deasil (as
opposed to widdershins.)
Write down on a piece of paper: Longitude is X; Latitude is Y. Then put
it in a locked box on your desk, and every morning take it out and read
it while your co-workers watch. When you die one day, and they finally
get to peek at your note, they will have a story to tell.
Or you could just visualize stalactites sporting lines of longitude and
stalagmites etched with latitudes.
