thanks everyone, that was very helpful and thanks Dane for pointing me to the lxml problem !

playing around with the xml import statements in the ogcserver scripts brought some results, but recompiling mapnik with the right sources will fix it i guess, this time without lxml as GetCapabilities wont be used for that service.

mod_python is slightly faster than wsgi on my ubuntu machine, thats why i wanted to use it on the server. but wsgi is of course an alternative.

just now my browser shows the requested URL as an image. no map, just text as png. i remember reading about this problem somewhere...

It would be good to note that here: http://trac.mapnik.org/wiki/OgcServer

Just tried and I can reproduce the same problem here. Ubuntu
server 9.10, Mapnik 0.7.1, mod_python will get stuck in Mapnik's
        load_map in WMS.py.

Strange enough, I'm using the *same* code under wsgi with no
        problems.

    Don't use mod_python. It's abandoned & dead[1], and has a whole pile
    of serious bugs.

Including a problem with lxml if mod-python's dodgy threading kicks
in. According to [1], try adding "PythonInterpreter
    main_interpreter" to your apache config.

But really, move to mod-wsgi. Mapnik certainly shouldn't be
    encouraging people to use mod_python.
