Marine mammal monitoring programme field assistant

 

Applications are invited for field assistant position on a marine mammal 
monitoring programme in Co. Mayo on the west coast of Ireland. The marine 
mammal monitoring programme is grant aided by Shell E&P Ireland through RSK 
Environment Ltd.

 

Background: Under a development plan for the CORRIB gas field off western 
Ireland, Enterprise Energy Ireland Ltd. commissioned the Coastal & Marine 
Research Centre (CMRC), University College Cork to conduct an independent 
cetacean monitoring programme in northwest Ireland in 2001 - 02. Due to the 
findings of preliminary field surveys in 2001 the study’s remit was expanded to 
also include other marine mammal species recorded in the study area. Research 
was undertaken in Broadhaven Bay (candidate Special Area of Conservation - 
cSAC), County Mayo and its adjoining coastal waters. The programme of marine 
mammal monitoring was continued in 2005, 2008 -2010 during the CORRIB 
development’s marine phases, to safeguard protected species from potential 
impacts. Research efforts are currently being continued in 2011 and into 2012.

 

Position: We are recruiting a field assistant to join a team of four others on 
the marine mammal monitoring programme to conduct shore and boat surveys of 
marine mammals in Broadhaven Bay. The position will be from May 2011-April 
2012. The candidate will be employed through the Coastal and Marine Research 
Centre (CMRC), Environmental Research Institute, University College Cork 
http://cmrc.ucc.ie <http://cmrc.ucc.ie/>  and will be based close to the study 
area in Broadhaven Bay. Accommodation and office space will be provided for the 
team.

 

Candidate: The researcher will require the following skills profile:

 

Obligatory

-BSc in biology/ecology

-Marine mammal sighting experience preferably both land and boat based 

-Experience in using TPODs and CPODs and working with acoustic data 
(particularly visual validation of T-POD files)

-Experience in using Access and Excel

-Proven ability to work as part of a small team

-Willingness to work in a remote part of western Ireland 

-Willingness to share accommodation with team members in the study area for a 6 
month period

-Willingness to work at weekends depending on weather conditions

-Experience in working remotely and unsupervised

-Proven ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time often in adverse 
weather

-Good physical fitness

-Good interpersonal skills

-Full drivers license

 

 Desirable

-Statistical analytical experience

-Cetacean photo-id experience 

-Experience with using a theodolite to track marine mammals

-GIS skills/experience

-Experience in writing reports/publications

-JNCC MMO course

-Safety at sea course

-First aid course

-own a car

 

Duration and salary: Duration is for an 11 month period. The salary for this 
position (gross) is fixed at €36,288
