One step ahead of you there. I did try to experiment with them (which was
next to impossible to fine tune considering I had no reliable check disc and
couldn't make a reliable Continuous Recording disc either), but of all
settings and combinations attempted, nothing fixed the problem. I'm 90%
certain it's the block, but I just don't have the optical test equipment to
confirm that. The electronics seems ok, all measurements are coming up fine,
but optically, nothing to test with.

As for the cost of replacing the block, it shouldn't be any more than
AUD$300 with labour. That's one reason why I took it to the boys at
Colorcheck. I've worked with them on a few occasions and while I've never
worked on any MD equipment with them, I know I can trust them for a solid,
reliable repair at a good price.

Adios,
LarZ

Tony, as for the JA-30 block problem, before you toss out the old head just
experiment a little with the Focus Bias and Laser Output settings - this
completely cured my MZ-R2 stuttering/'disc err' problems and Sony wanted
$550 Aus to replace the block......
