ok, I have to ask, what sort of lens cleaners are we talking about here?
(excuse the ignorance - I've never seen an actual real MD lens cleaner in
Real Life and wouldn't be surprised to learn that none have ever been
brought into this country).  

The only MD lens cleaner I'm aware of is the one made by Sony that looks
like a MD that you just slot into the machine.  Given that it's made by
Sony, surely it must be safe - or is the collective MD-L wisdom that even
these MD cleaners should be used sparingly?  Incidentally how do they work?

The circumstance yoiu describe sounds like a candidate for a cleaneer. 
The main issue is, don't use one regularly like an oil change. Use it if
you have to because of a problem, but dont't use it onece a week or once
a month for that matter.  IMHO..
