Leo, I have to agree with you.  The only pitfall with TOSlink is excessive
length.  Len Moskowitz of Core Sound states that you are find up to about 16
feet.

But any type of signal is going to deteriorate with long lengths.  That's why
they have repeaters and stuff like that (I might not be using the corect term,
"I'm a dentist not an electrical engineer, Jim"-little paraphrased Star Trek
humor there-very little).
