Hi. I'm sure that there is someone here who will be able to give you a more
qualified answer. But with miniature things like a portable MD recorder or
player. I think that you would probably have a hard time finding the leads to
connect an optical transceiver to.

Basically it's an LED with a standardized shape (mini plug or more likely,
TOSlink. I know that they make the TOSlink variety and they are easy to get,
because I bought 2 from someone right on the list.

If you have the right CD ROM drive there are instructions somewhere on the net
telling you how to make a digital optical output. Your drive has to have the
correct leads.

The only mini plug optical out I ever saw was on my MZ-1. Sony's first
portable MD recorder. It was a dual purpose jack, just like the input is. I
think that Sony came up with the idea of an analog/optical jack (someone
correct me if you are sure I am wrong).

I think that it is such a neat invention. But it is not (or should I say was
not a standard jack). TOSlink on the other hand has been around for a long
time.

Have a great day,
Larry
