Well, I just got the Sony MZ-R70, and I love it. I had even more questions,
because I am totally blind, so I had to know whether I could access all of
the features without seeing a thing. I can, except of course for the titling
feature. Anyhow, yes, you can listen to what is being recorded through the
earphones. Also, it is good because when the disc runs out, or you are not
recording properly, you won't hear the stuff that you want to record. I use
a lapel mic for recording my classes, and if you buy a mono mic, you should
be able to hear the difference when you switch between stereo and mono. You
can then hear what mode your in and make sure in case you are looking at
something else. I figure that if you wish to keep an eye on the video as
well as keep track of the md recorder, you may e-mail me privately or on the
list if you wish to know how I use the md recorder without seeing the
display. Therefore, you can manipulate the machine while keeping your eyes
on the video. Also, you will not be able to adjust the recording level while
you are actually recording, unlike other models.
