But David, NOT on the new Sony players. There are two
kinds of "combo" jacks: the kind used on many Sharp
models that automatically sense the impedance of the
attached device/cable, and change to line/headphone
appropriately; and the kind used on many Sony recorder
units that can be manually switched between
line/headphone by the user.

The jack on the new Sony players is NEITHER (caps for
clarity, not volume ;)). It is headphone-only, and
cannot act as a line out. This is according to Sony.
