I read many people complaining of low sound level with this portable unit.

I solved the problem by replacing the provided (poor quality) earphone with
a Sony MDR-E811.

Try this out (any near-equivalent will do), you will hear a significant
enhancement in both sound level and clarity.

By the way, still no way to enter service/test mode and TOC cloning with
this unit or the JVC XM-228 ?
