The freeze idea sounds good to me since we haven't really spent much

There is a silly, but critical issue that we need¹ to fix before cutting

I have build an appropriate test and I am working on a fix.
I was planning to release a RC later today but can wait a day or two
if the fix gets ready. Else we can get that fixed in 5.9.
Releasing the RC with issue6542 would mean encouraging people to test a
release that actively eats they data.
We probably do not want to do that.
I poked at a fix and I have something that will only requires minor
adjustment, I should have a patch tomorrow morning.
Cheers,
