It has 256k. Wine will not run programs with a lot of graphics well.
It did not run these games well enough to use when I tried. The
ubuntu website seems to say that it will just squeak through and I might
want to use the alternative install cd.

Wine is often a good solution for running old Windows9x games.
They have a copy protect on them so that they only run with
the CD in the drive. I tried to speed up their running in Wine by
copying the cd contents to the drive, but the program kept looking for
the drive, anyway.
That's typical. There are sometimes "nocd cracks" available to get around
this kind of problem for legally owned software.

processing, and send him into his sister's room for the old games.
Actually I'd be surprised if the latest Ubuntu still ran on a Pentium 2. For
starters the text-based alternate install requires a minimum of 256 MB to
install, and AFAIK the latest Ubuntu does not carry older proprietary video
drivers (ATI, Nvidia) that you may or may not need. You might want to use an
older copy of Ubuntu if you try it.
